Silverstone was the setting for Round Nine of the National Saloon Championships. Dave Allan missed this round as he was away on business with Honda. This was the third meeting this year that he had missed for this reason.

With only a two-week gap between the 24-hour race at Spa, it was decided to concentrate on just one car for this meeting, which would be driven by the Synchro regular driver, Kevin Hicks. The 24-hour Civic was also required for display in the Powertour village.

There was a test session on the Friday but, as was often the case this season, the team was unable to attend because of their normal work commitments.

Qualifying was on the Saturday. It was cloudy but dry as the twenty-one cars set off at 12.24. Kevin, as he normally does, started slowly. Perhaps more slowly than usual as he found himself down in eighteenth place. His best time around Silverstone was 1m 37's but he struggled for eight laps around the 1m 38.5 mark.

On his ninth lap, he pitted for a tyre change. There would be just sufficient time for three flying laps when he returned to the circuit. Kevin rose to the occasion and managed a 1m 37.198 on the last of these laps to jump four places to fourteenth, a much more respectable position.
