Kevin's
car was undamaged from its foray in the sand but it had collected a
load of gravel in the chassis and other nooks and crannies, which all
had to be removed before tomorrow's race.
On arrival at the circuit on Sunday, the weather had taken a turn for
the worse with heavy rain falling. The forecast was for sun and showers.
The race would, therefore, remain a lottery as to which tyres would
be needed right up to the last. The rain did stop and, even though it
did briefly shower around midday, the race took place in sunshine.
A record entry of twenty cars lined up on the grid. Kevin and Bill made
reasonable starts but both slid sideways at the first corner but recovered
with Bill finding himself just in front of Kevin but toward the back
of the pack. Kevin could make no impression and gradually dropped back,
with the car looking down on power and, as Kevin explained, with the
handling giving him a lot of trouble. Bill, meanwhile, was holding his
position but with Paolo Ceci, in a Honda Integra, getting progressively
closer. Paolo did squeeze through at Copse with about three laps to
go. However, Bill's problems did not end there as, whilst accelerating
away from Abbey, the engine blew and his race was over.
Kevin after a battle with Desmond Smail just held on for eleventh place
with the fast finishing Brian Ward breathing down his back.
There is now a two-week break to the next meeting at Brands Hatch. During
this time it will be important to ascertain the problem with the engine
and, for the second meeting running, rebuild it in time for the next
race. Bill Stilwell will again be driving the Civic as Dave Allan will
still be away in Japan.
