June 24/25 NURBURGRING (Page 2)

The first session started at 12.15 and the weather was cloudy with a light feel of drizzle in the air. It was also quite cold for a June day.

Dave Allan was the first driver out and the plan was to do a lap of the Grand Prix circuit before setting out on the Nordschleife. The only problem that Dave encountered on this first lap was the clutch, which needed a minor adjustment before Dave set sail on three laps before he handed over to Kevin Hicks to finish the first session.

On the second of his three laps, Dave put in an 11m06sec lap, five seconds quicker than last year! His next lap was faster but no time registered on the official lap chart. The reason was that the transponder that gives out a signal from the car had failed. The official timekeepers also record the times by hand so that it should not have presented any problem. When Paul Smith downloaded that data from the car's computer, a lap time of 10m44sec was indicated!

Kevin went out for his three laps and put in some steady 11m50sec laps, an ideal start position.

The car had weathered the first session well. It had also attracted a large number of admiring glances for the way it was turned out.

Unfortunately Dave's time for the first session did not work out as was thought and the official time was strangely given as 11m19sec.
