Wednesday was scrutineering day and it took place in the square in the centre of Spa village. All the cars made a fascinating sight and attracted many visitors. After the drivers' brief which was held in a hotel in Spa, the cars were actually driven the five miles back to the circuit along public roads. Here they were garaged in preparation for the start of testing and qualifying in the morning. Thursday was a busy day, with one test and three qualifying sessions, two of which took place at night. The final session actually finished at midnight. The track was wet but drying for the one-hour practice session as rain had fallen heavily for most of the morning. Dave Allan was the first driver out at 13.15. His stint went without hitch although he did mention that the car was understeering slightly. After 8 laps, he came into the pits and Kevin Hicks took over for the final 30 minutes. The weather had improved and was now bright and sunny. Kevin reduced his lap times down to 3.03.80 for the 4.313 mile circuit. The first session had gone well and without incident. |
