Dave also lost seven laps of his session when the safety car came out again and he had also experienced trouble with the VTEC after the oil pressure had dropped. At 3.30 and still twenty-fifth, Bill took over from Dave. By the end of his second drive, the Civic was up two more places to twenty-third and thirteenth in class. He pitted at 5.15. At this pit stop the brake pads were also changed along with a complete oil change in favour of much thicker oil in an attempt to cure the low oil pressure problem. It seemed to work. Six minutes later, Kevin was back out on the track. This session, though, started with a hitch as he was baulked whilst negotiating a corner and finished up in the gravel. He lost about three minutes before he was towed out, but he then went on to drive what was possibly the finest drive of his life. He put in some sparkling times, consistently putting in laps around the 2:55 mark. His best time was a quite remarkable 2:53.87. Of the thirty-eight laps he drove in this session, only three laps, excluding the out and in laps, were in the three minute zone and that included his gravel trip. He pitted at 7:15 to routinely hand over to Dave Allan. Synchro were lying twenty-second overall when he started his session. This session was not trouble free. At 8.45 the Civic came together with a BMW and was projected across the track and into the barrier. Quite considerable damage was to the front bumper but Dave had reported that it did not seem to have affected the handling too much. He continued to lap under three minutes and pitted at 9.15 to hand over to Bill Stilwell. The pit stop took just under six minutes as the damaged front bumper was extensively taped to try to keep it together for the final seven hours of the race. A complete oil change was also carried out. The car was now twentieth and twelfth in class. Bill's session was completely trouble free although his session only lasted for one hour and twenty minutes. He pitted and after a five-minute stop, Kevin returned to the track. The time was now 10.40. There was now just over 5 hours left. |
