May 6/7 DONINGTON PARK (Page 2)

Things did not go well from the start. Both Dave and Kevin immediately struggled, with both cars looking down on power. On lap 3, Kevin had problems at Coppice Corner and slid into the gravel trap and his qualifying session was over. Dave Allan pitted shortly after complaining of vibration from the car. He returned to the track and had to fight hard for his 1m21.793. It was his best time around the Donington circuit but below his target time for the day. He qualified eleventh of the eighteen cars that had entered this round.

The trouble was found to be due to the brake pads. Larger 20mm brake pads had been fitted to the car after the problems encountered at Oulton. However, these were a tight fit and, under expansion, had caused the brakes to bind. Both cars would return to 16mm pads for the race.
Kevin helped prove the point as he was asked to go out again to complete one lap behind the course car as he had only completed two of the requisite three qualifying laps. He immediately reported that the car felt much better with the new pads.

Sunday was overcast with the sun occasionally bursting through. The race had returned to twenty minutes for this round and was, as usual, the first race of the day at one o'clock.

On the warm up lap rain started to fall. Not heavy but sufficient to dampen the track. The Donington circuit is on he flight path for the approach to East Midlands airport and fuel from the aircraft impregnates the track and causes it to be extra tricky when damp.
