July 1/2 DONINGTON PARK (Page 2)

Qualifying started at 12.22. Kevin started slowly and it was not until his eighth lap
that he dropped into the 1m52sec mark. The set up on his Civic had been changed since his last race and it had taken a little time to adjust to these settings. His best lap was 1m52.223 which put him seventeenth on the grid from the twenty-two starters in the race.

Dave Allan had a good session finishing eleventh with a best lap of 1m 50.706, but close enough to the leading pack to be satisfying.

Sunday was humid and, at times, very warm. Rain, as yesterday, was a constant threat. Because the Powertour series had staged an extra event at this meeting, the Saloons were due to start the meeting half an hour earlier at 12.30.

The race was underway at 12.31 and was immediately full of controversy. After only about 200 yards a collision between Toni Ruokonen and Simon Harrison sent them both careering off the track. Harrison went into a slide that took him along the grass at the side of the track and back onto the circuit at Redgate, the first corner. Unfortunately he collected Dave Allan's Civic as Dave was negotiating that corner. The impact on the rear quarter sent Dave spinning and he was hit again as the car spun round. He finished up on the side of the track but managed, after a slight delay, to get the Civic going again and set off in pursuit of the others. Simon Harrison's race was over as he had lost a wheel in the incident.

Kevin, meanwhile, was in thirteenth place and holding his own. On the third lap, Phil Andrews, who had just recovered from spin, collided with Desmond Smail's Integra down the pit straight. Both cars were out of the race but stopped in a dangerous position so the black and yellow flags came out to slow the race down whilst the marshalls cleared the track. This enabled Dave to get back on the tail end of cars.
