Dave's car was definitely better. He said that it occasionally missed a beat but had improved since yesterday. Second lap out he put the car in the 2m 50's with a lap time of 2m 50.536, 1.4 seconds quicker than yesterday. He pitted after for laps for new tyres on the front but could only manage one more flying lap as he had to coast back to the pits with virtually no fuel left in the car. It had been a gamble to send Dave out with minimum fuel that, unfortunately, did not quite work. The data from the car's computer showed that Dave was on his best lap when the car started to splutter. There should have been time for two more laps and it would have been interesting to see whether Dave could have broken the 2m 50 barrier. Dave's best lap only put him in twenty-first position of the 33 cars that started, such was the quality of the opposition. Kevin again struggled for a good time. He pitted after five laps for a routine check but had only managed to put in a 2m 56.787 lap. On his first lap back out he put in his fastest of the session, 2m 55.808. He was then hit once again by a problem when his gearbox blew at the bottom of Eau Rouge. He managed to coast up the hill and pull in to the side of track to retire from the session. Kevin finished thirtieth in this first session and would be looking to improve on this in the second qualifying session tomorrow. The weather may, though, have a little say in whether he could jump himself up the grid. The gearbox in Kevin's car had to be replaced with the spare. This was completed before packing away for the night in readiness for the second session tomorrow, which scheduled for an early start. The second qualifying session began in bright sunshine again. It started on time at 10.25. Both Dave and Kevin started reasonably well. Dave did three laps before pitting to change his front tyres. His best time at that stage was a 2m 53.395. Kevin came in after four laps with a best time very slightly quicker than yesterday of 2m 55.099 After the tyre change, Dave reduced his times down to 2m 50.303. Breaking into the 2m 49second barrier might just be on. Three laps from the end he dived in front of Nick James at the bus stop and clipped the tyres almost tipping the car over. He had time for just two more laps and on the second of these went into the 2m49's with a 2m 49.644. This only jumped him up one place to twenty-fourth! In the National Saloon class, it left him in tenth place. |
