Kevin faired similarly and on his last lap finally put in a much better lap, putting in a 2m 52.519. This was 3.3 seconds quicker than the time he recorded yesterday. It put him up to twenty-eighth on the grid (fifteenth in the National Saloon class). Tomorrow's race is bound to be tough with so many cars closely matched. With the race set for thirty minutes the attrition rate is probably going to be high. It will again be very interesting. The weather was good yet again for the race on Sunday. In bright sunshine the race started around 15 minutes late. With 33 cars in the race, contact would always be a problem. Numerous incidents on the first lap virtually decided the championship. It certainly put paid to Dave Allan's chances as, on the first lap, whilst going into the bend three abreast, a slight touch from another car sent him careering off the track. He managed to get it back but not before the barrier took its toll. He clipped the barrier, which smashed into the rear panel, pushing it in against the wheel. Dave continued as best he could but the tyre punctured very quickly and he had to struggle back into the pits for a wheel change. However, when he returned to the track, it was obvious that all was not well and he had to retire from the race with extensive damage to the rear chassis and suspension. Kevin struggled throughout and could not really get into the race. Despite what appeared to be a push from Matt Kelly at the Bus Stop on the last lap, he managed to finish yet again back in eleventh place in the National Saloons and twentieth overall of the twenty-two finishers. Kevin's car was also badly damaged with the rear nearside pushed in after an incident with Matt Kelly. Both Civics now require a lot of work if they are going to be ready for the last round of the championship at Silverstone in two weeks time. Although very attractive to the spectators, it seems illogical to incorporate the cars from the Dutch Touring series in with the Saloons at a very crucial time of the championship. Ironically it was not a scoring event for the Dutch. Perhaps it should have been the same for the Saloons. |
